Recording Costs

Recording doesn't have to be expensive. Each project requires different resources and so providing fixed competitive prices would be implausible. The following guide aims to provide some ideas of the tasks involved in producing a disc of music and where possible, financial estimates for the costs of each process involved in creating a disc through seven steps:

  1. Material & Musicians

  2. Venue?

  3. Recording

  4. Editing

  5. Mastering

  6. Copyright

  7. Production

Mastering refers to the process of adding the final touches to your music tracks, i.e. balance of treble and bass, volume etc… Depending on your project, you may need very little mastering, if any. Where mastering is appropriate, we can advise on what you may get for your money.

What will it sound like?

Every recording is different. The 'CD' pages on this site have some samples of choral and organ music recorded at Portsmouth Cathedral. Every element of the recording process has an impact on the final 'sound' of a piece of music. It is important to find the right space for your music to come alive. Once you have somewhere to perform, it is necessary to select the most suitable equipment to capture that sound as accurately as possible. A brief list of some of the equipment we use most is included below for interest's sake. Specialist equipment can be hired for specific requirements. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
