Logo   Congratulations on the marvellous production -
the dynamics have been treated with respect,
and one is left with an excellent sense of space and place.
A well-balanced collection that bears repeated listening...

Portsmouth Cathedral is fortunate enough to have three choirs to assist in its programme of daily worship. The Cathedral Choir is made up of boy choristers who sing with Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars. The Parish Choir provides an opportunity for people of all ages to get involved with singing for the Parish Eucharist each Sunday, whilst Cantate is a more recent addition to the musical life of the Cathedral, enabling young singers to sing evensong once a week and take part in special services and concerts. With around three hundred services a year, shared between three choirs, it is hardly surprising to find that bringing them all together at once is usually reserved for special occasions.

The aim of this collection of liturgical music is to highlight how singers of all ages contribute to the musical life of Portsmouth Cathedral. Each choir and piece of repertoire has its own characteristics and so musical items have been recorded in different parts of the cathedral building. It seemed only appropriate to conclude this snapshot of musical life at Portsmouth Cathedral, with two items for ‘Great Choir’. These draw together the musical threads which run through the liturgical year and provide cohesion to cathedral worship.
